1951

Reconstruction is in full swing in both East and West Germany, including factories, roads and, primarily, housing, e.g. for miners in the Ruhr Area. The GDR erects a steel mill, the “Eisenhüttenkombinat Ost”, in order to supply its population with steel. In the West, the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) is concluded. This French-German cooperation in the production of steel and coal has have far-reaching consequences marking the beginnings of a unified Europe and becoming one of the driving forces for the West German “economic miracle“.

Conflicts between East and West continue. To court the favour of the younger generation, GDR leaders organise the World Festival of Democratic Youth in East Berlin. Thousands of young people take this opportunity to explore the city’s western parts.

What else happened?

While people are doing better, luxury goods remain scarce. The police hunt for coffee smugglers along the German-Belgian border.

For the first time after the war, the Mercedes-Benz “Silver Arrows“ are back on track.
