1970

Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt makes history. The Social Democrat wants to reconcile with Germany’s Eastern European neighbours. Although his Eastern Policy earns him many enemies within the conservative camp, Brandt persists on his course and signs the Treaty of Moscow in August. The following November, after laying a wreath at the memorial to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, he kneels down – a gesture of humility which causes a worldwide sensation.

The 1968 movement finds its way into the nursery schools. The education of the kids is to be “anti-authoritarian“ and less strict. The dispute on proper education methods will preoccupy West German society for years to come.

What else happened?

A flu epidemic kills more than 2000 people.

The first episode of the crime television series “Tatort“ (“Crime Scene“) is broadcast.

New sports cars appear on German streets: the Opel Manta in the West, the Melkus in the East.
