For the first time, GDR citizens are permitted to travel to Poland without a visa. While in Poland, East German tourists discover liberties previously unknown to them, the Polish are primarily thrilled by the consumer goods offered in the shops of the East German “Konsum“ chain.

During the Summer Olympics in Munich, members of the Israeli Olympic team are taken hostage and eventually murdered by a militant Palestinian group. A rescue attempt at Munich airport fails bloodily. International terrorism has reached a first climax.

For the first time since the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany, a motion of no confidence is put before the parliament. The conservative opposition makes an attempt to topple Chancellor Willy Brandt and his social-liberal coalition government. But the motion fails. Instead, the Social Democratic Party wins the snap elections, emerging as the strongest party.
