The Federal Republic of Germany hosts its first Football World Cup. For the first time, the GDR takes part in the tournament. In the first round, Jürgen Sparwasser’s goal seals East Germany’s legendary 1-0 triumph over its West German neighbour. While the GDR team is eliminated in the second round, the host nation eventually wins the cup.

An East German intelligence agent is uncovered in the Federal Chancellery. West German authorities discover that Günter Guillaume, the secretary to the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt, had been spying for the GDR’s Ministry for State Security (“Stasi“) for years. Pressure on the popular chancellor increases, leading to Brandt’s resignation. He is succeeded by fellow Social Democrat Helmut Schmidt.

The Volkswagen Golf  replaces the Volkswagen Beetle, setting standards for a car type which will soon carry its name.
