In Prague, the German and Czech heads of state, Helmut Kohl und Václav Klaus, sign the German-Czech Declaration. The agreement marks a cornerstone in the improvement of the relations between the two neighbouring countries that share a burdened past.

After days of heavy rain, the Oder and Lusatian Neisse rivers overflow. Floodwaters coming in from Poland and the Czech Republic rush towards Germany. 30.000 soldiers are deployed in an unprecedented relief operation. Nevertheless, two dikes break, flooding large areas in Brandenburg.
