The most severe train accident in the history of Germany occurs near the village of Eschede in Lower Saxony. At 200 km/h, an ICE high speed train derails and crashes into a bridge. The magnitude of the disaster quickly becomes apparent at the accident location. A total of 101 people are killed or so severely injured that they die of their injuries later.
